On Thursday 17 July 2014 the world lost a young advocate for human rights, democracy, the rule of law and freedom – Pim de Kuijer from the Netherlands was killed together with 297 others as their airplane was brutally shot down. A new tragic chapter in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
IFLRY had the honour of having Pim as a facilitator for several trainings and seminars. Here he volunteered for the liberal youth cause, while creating eternal friendships with his memorable cheerful personality.
As a board member of the International Democratic Initiative (the international foundation of Dutch political party D66) and the dedicated facilitator he was, Pim was committed to his party’s international work worldwide.
For his job as a professional lobbyist for an AIDS prevention organisation, Pim was travelling to an international AIDS conference in Australia. Other AIDS researchers and activists were on board of the same plane. Their loss is a huge blow to the community that fights to eradicate the world of this terrible disease.
Pim was genuinely interested in the world and people around him. It is a bitter twist of faith that his loss is directly linked to a crisis which held his personal and ongoing interest. A crisis which everyday causes hatred, violence and death. The international media attention for the crash of flight MH17 must remind the world of the horrifying situation that is still unfolding in Ukraine.
IFLRY is shocked and horrified by the loss of all 298 victims of the crash and extends its heart-felt condolences to all their loved ones.
IFLRY remembers Pim for the engagement and courage he showed, and his commitment to young liberals worldwide. This was just one aspect of Pim’s beautiful life. He was also a loving brother and son, and an inspiring friend for many. IFLRY wishes all of those strength to deal with this terrible loss.
