The Soviet Union has left long lasting effects that ex-member states feel to this day. This includes cultural heritage: naming of streets, schools, public spaces, monuments and so on. In recent years, ex-member states have been trying to distance themselves from this past and some measures are sometimes deemed to be controversial and a lot of questions are raised:
Why do ex-member states try to distance themselves from the Soviet past?
What are the actions they are taking?
How do you find a line between decolonisation and destroying cultural heritage?
To answer those questions we will be joined by Oleksandr Kraiev (Analyst of Foreign policy council “Ukrainian Prism”. PhD candidate in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Senior lecturer in National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy).
It’s important to heed the lessons of history and change established cliche about ex-member states of the Soviet Union. We will be talking about common post-imperialistic backgrounds and challenges related to this.
