On 2-5 October 2014, more than 70 delegates from North America, Latin America, Europe and the MENA region gathered in central Kyiv, Ukraine for the 37th IFLRY General Assembly.
A short Executive Committee session to prepare the General Assembly took place on 2 October. Following the EC session, the 4th IFLRY Freedom Award ceremony unfolded.
The Turkish liberal activist group 3H Movement (IFLRY Full Member) was awarded the 4th IFLRY Freedom Award for its innovating campaigns. The 3H Movement dedicated their award to the late Dutch liberal activist Pim de Kuijer, who tragically lost his life with the attack on the MH17 in the east of Ukraine.
Anıl Yılmaz, international officer of 3H Movement stated, ‘We are proud of receiving international recognition for our work with the IFLRY Freedom Award. It is an honour to dedicate the award to Pim de Kuijer, who was a friend of 3H Movement and who made a lasting impression on our members.’
The 37th General Assembly itself took place in the historic Hotel Ukraine situated on Maidan and was preceded by a Conference, “Ukraine as a Key Actor for Democracy in the Region”. Prominent speakers included Dr. Mychailo Wynnyckyj (Kyiv-Mohyla Academy) and Danylo Bilak (Managing Partner, CMS Cameron McKenna LLP).

The first General Assembly session was opened by IFLRY President, Christian Scharling with a speech on how liberal values ensure dialogue in conflicts. To chair the General Assembly, Ivo Thijssen, Tanya Lubimova and Sven Gerst swiftly took the delegates through reports, resolutions and other necessary statutory documents.
The second General Assembly session was opened by Vesa Turtiainen, founding member of the Liberal Youth Foundation and previous IFLRY Vice-President. Turtiainen spoke on the importance of the newly established Liberal Youth Foundation and gave the Foundation’s first donation. The donation was given to GA hosting organization European Youth of Ukraine (IFLRY Full Member).
