IFLRY, the International Federation of Liberal Youth, is an international political umbrella organization promoting cooperation among youth and student organizations to spread liberal values. The federation consists of over 80 member organizations from around the world. We are seeking a new Executive Director based in our office in Berlin, Germany.

Terms of Engagement

As the Executive Director, you will work full-time (40 hours per week). You may be required to work weekends and evenings when necessary (before statutory events, seminars, or grant application deadlines). International travel is an integral part of the role. The gross salary will range from €39,000 to €42,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. The Executive Director is entitled to 25 annual vacation days and statutory holidays in Germany.

Mandatory Requirements

We encourage non-EU citizens to apply, but we currently cannot sponsor applications for work permits in the EU. The candidate must have the work permits needed to work in Germany.

Necessary Qualifications

– Understanding and respect for Liberal values: It is crucial that the applicant shares fundamental liberal values, serving as a foundation for the Federation’s work.

– University Degree: The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree. 

– Programme/project management: The applicant should have experience in project or program management, including fundraising, planning, implementing, evaluating, and reporting.

– Financial management: Previous experience in developing and ensuring the implementation of financial plans, overseeing budgetary activities, financial reporting, and accounting- and auditing processes.

– Office management & leadership: Experience managing staff and offices, creating a healthy and motivating work environment. The applicant must be solution-oriented, adaptable, and perceptive.

– Communication: The applicant must maintain and grow an international network of donors and partners, ensuring continuous contact and good relations with their representatives and people from different cultural backgrounds in a diplomatic manner.

– Language: The applicant must be fluent in English. German Language skills are a plus.

Additional Assets

– Proficiency in other languages, mainly French and Spanish.

– Experience in international youth work and liberal youth organizations.

– Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPress, and accounting programs.

– Experience managing grants, particularly with the Council of Europe or European institutions.

Description of duties and tasks

As the head of our office in Berlin, you will lead a dedicated small team and support member organizations and Bureau Members in their activities. Your responsibilities will include:

Work with the Bureau (The Executive Board of IFLRY)

– Continuously update the Bureau on the work of the Institute, including project and donor developments, staff changes, and any other relevant information.

– Work with the Bureau to develop and implement the strategic direction and annual work program for IFLRY.

– Plan and prepare board meetings, their structure, and agenda.

Operational responsibility

– Overall responsibility for ensuring all projects’ initiation, implementation, finalization, and evaluation.

Office management

– Ensure a healthy work environment for staff.

– Allocate tasks and projects and follow up on the work with staff.

– Conduct yearly employee appraisals.

– Recruit and dismiss staff.

– Registration and banking operations.

Financial management

– Develop the annual financial plan for the Institute and ensure its implementation.

– Oversee budgetary activities and ensure that adequate controls are in place.

– Develop and maintain diverse funding, including final financial reporting.

– Oversee accounting and bookkeeping.

– Ensure necessary internal and external audits take place according to the stated deadlines.

Communication

– Represent IFLRY externally at appropriate events and meetings.

– Maintain contact with IFLRY’s donors, partners, and other relevant stakeholders.
